For my mental health, I've applied a very strong filter to news that I listen to or watch. Most of it is awful and sensational and without hope. I realize there is really no point in taking it in other than to feel worse than before I heard it.
I have to say this filter really has been effective but one does need to consume media from time to time. One alternative source is podcasts.
On a recent drive into work, I happened upon a podcast that always makes me smile: Tig Notaro's "Don't Ask Tig" podcast is a gem. Even better, her guest on this episode was Wilson Cruz.
Now to recap, a podcast from Tig Notaro and Wilson cruz ticks a number of boxes because:
- It's a joy for Trekkies
- It's a hit for discussion on visibility of POC in media
- Of course there is lots of GLBTQIA love including a brief mention of the fact that Abe Lincoln loved a dude (love letters and all)
- Some guidance on how to manage friendships
- Gentle encouragement on how to stay healthy
I don't know about you but I think most everyone can use some encouragement in one or more of the above areas.
Give it a listen and tell me if you agree.
Feel good is great! Thanks.
