As a union worker today, I am aware of just how rare this type of support is for any employee. I'm 100% sure that my wages and benefits would be far less if I were not represented.
Side note, some of today's unions are also working on better ways to represent further marginalized people. As an example, my union, the Amalgamated Transit Union, has recently formed a PRIDE Coalition representing those of us who are LGBTQIA+ members.

You are correct to show the correlation between yester-years unions, the development of anti-union sentiment as it seeped into our society, and the outcome of thousands of people being laid off in a single day by a large corporation.
