As a union worker today, I am aware of just how rare this type of support is for any employee. I'm 100% sure that my wages and benefits would be far less if I were not represented.
Side note, some of today's unions are also working on better ways to represent further marginalized people. As an example, my union, the Amalgamated Transit Union, has recently formed a PRIDE Coalition representing those of us who are LGBTQIA+ members.
Wonderful story about your Dad. Amazing to know the Hearing came to his aid like that.
You are correct to show the correlation between yester-years unions, the development of anti-union sentiment as it seeped into our society, and the outcome of thousands of people being laid off in a single day by a large corporation. It breaks my heart to see people thrown aside as though they are nothing more than a paper trail. Quite insightful. Thank you!
Thank you and yes it's true. It was quite unusual for us to have hearing people in the house like this. I was all of about 4 or 5 years old but I can picture them so clearly. Only years later did I grasp the full extent of what they were doing.
Agree that the present day treatment of so many people is heart breaking. I read recently that in other countries like Norway or Sweden, the idea of layoffs is totally unacceptable and just not done. I can't imagine what it would be like to not have to think about the possibility of job loss as a constant cloud over the day to day.

Thats good to hear that you feel represented. I'm also glad to hear that they stand up for LGBTQIA+ members as they should!
A group that is often targeted for mistreatment especially needs the protection a union can offer.
Truly the Socialist countries are light years ahead of us. Ah, would that we could be so smart.

Love the photo of you and your dad. 😍 I loved being protected by the teacher's union.
Thanks! Did you have any workplace issue that your union was able to help with?
